The Tony Leone Quintet is a New York City–based jazz group heard at Smalls Jazz Club, where the band works in the close, late-night conditions that shape much of the city’s modern straight-ahead scene. Led by drummer Tony Leone, the quintet draws on the working language of bop and post-bop, with arrangements built for quick shifts between written figures and open improvisation. The group’s playing favors timekeeping and ensemble balance over spectacle, letting solos emerge from the groove rather than sit on top of it.
